MONTE ROSA REGION

On the backside of Switzerland’s highest peak, sits a system of lifts that link 3 adjacent valleys – Val d’Ayas, Val de Lys, and Valsesia, which comprise the Monterosa Ski region. Champoluc, Gressoney, and Alagna, Italy are a throwback to what skiing used to be like – real villages with massive peaks looming above, classic hotels and family-run alpine inns, and incredible lift-served access to some of the finest runs in the Alps. Some storms will park on the south side of the massif, dumping for days on end in Monterosa, while the Zermatt side stays sunny and dry. And when it goes blue again, there are ample helicopters and mountain guides to take you to the high alpine for the best heliskiing and off-piste runs of your life.

Whether you decide to stay in family-friendly Champoluc, known for its forested glades, or Gressoney, the central valley with the biggest lift-accessed descents from the top of the new Punta Indren cablecar, or Alagna the rootsy Walser village to the east, there is terrain forever in Monterosa Ski.

Each of these 3 valleys have their own character, defined by the hardy local Walser people who inhabited them centuries ago. Nomadic farmers who crossed the main alpine ridge during the middle ages, their typical dry-stone barns and architecture is found throughout the Monterosa region, and makes it a culturally unique stronghold. In the summer months follow in the footsteps of the Walsers on the the Tour del Cervino, circumnavigating the Matterhorn and experiencing the 3 distinct cultures of this region.
