The Tschäggättä are frightening characters dressed in animal skins and scary carved wooden masks, who terrorize the streets of the villages in the Lötschental Valley during Carnival, in the days leading up to Mardi Gras. They symbolize the evil sprits who caused so much mischief during the winter months, and signify the beginning of spring.
