Not many more superlatives can be said of this mountain Mecca that hasn’t been said before. Tourism in the Alps began here, and still the endless glacial tumble off Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest peak, draws millions every year to this improbable French city jammed between the steep “Aiguilles” of the jagged massif. An authentic alpine metropolis, where modern-day mountaineers rub elbows on the street with living legends, café society thrives in the afternoons on sunny terraces, and people come from around the world to test themselves.
Skiing in the Chamonix Valley: Seven different resorts make up the Mont Blanc Unlimited ski area, ranging from the family-friendly slopes of Les Houches to the unparalleled ski mountaineering-access of the Aiguille du Midi cablecar, where you begin the unparalleled Vallée Blanche. In-between, you have the tree skiing of Vallorcine, the mom-and-pop feel of Le Tour, as well as the powder skiing paradise of les Grands Montets, all up-valley from the town center. And across the valley from Mont Blanc, Flégère and Brévent, offering sunny south-facing slopes and some legendary steeps with outrageous views from les Aiguilles Rouges. Summer in Chamonix: During the summer months, hiking and climbing take over as the sports of choice (although you can still ski off the Aiguille du Midi well into June), with the Tour du Mont Blanc point-to-point hike being a bucket-list trek for many. For those looking for a less extreme getaway you can always play a game of golf in the shadow of Mont Blanc, shop the Parisian brands in Chamonix, and enjoy a dinner at Michelin starred restaurant, far from the rock and ice.
