Lucerne owes its development firstly to its geographical location on the important north-south transport axis, sandwiched between the Swiss Plateau and the Alps at the threshold to Central Switzerland, and secondly to the uniquely picturesque scenery of this region.

 

The Lake Region with the city of Lucerne and the idyllic lakeside villages of Weggis and Vitznau on the sunny southern flank of Mt. Rigi offer a variety of experiences. The museums, theatres and festivals have all contributed to establishing Lucerne as a culture city, which elegantly accommodates both tradition and trend. Just as fascinating as the charming city of Lucerne is the surrounding area. Excursion to the Alps in the region is, in fact, an age-old tradition. Traces of this tradition can be tracked while taking a ride on Europe’s oldest mountain railway, as it winds its way up Mt. Rigi or on the world’s steepest cogwheel train to the top of Mt. Pilatus. For more extreme adventure take revolving aerial cable car to the top of Mt. Titlis: at 3000 meters, it is the highest accessible peak in the region.
