Once a favorite Belle-Epoque resort for bon vivants, Andermatt was taken over as the Swiss Army mountain training base during WWII, and her hotels and services dwindled as a result. But as of 2013, with a new investment and development of Switzerland’s newest 5-star resort, Andermatt has a new facelift, and has once again gained a reputation as a must-visit stop on the grand tour. One thing that never changed was the ski terrain, known throughout the cognoscenti as a throwback to the days before the resorts of the Alps were overrun with freeriders – offering big powder descents, zero liftlines, and immense terrain and potential for exploration.
Now the Chedi Andermatt, a part of an ambitious new development that will revitalize this sleepy town and bring it up to the 5-star standard of more renowned Swiss resorts, has opened in December 2013, and has put Andermatt back on the map for the luxury traveler. The development will continue into 2018, with new 4-star hotels, apartments and chalets, as well as a golf resort, revamped village center and commercial area completing the project.
There are other fantastic hotel options for all tastes, including the River House Boutique Hotel, one of our favorites in the Alps. Situated right in the center of the village, it’s a popular hangout for locals and guests alike, with Die Alt Apothek (the old pharmacy) bar and an excellent restaurant.
And Andermatt, receiving some of the heaviest snowfall in Switzerland, boasts the best conditions winter-long. When walking the cobblestone streets in a blizzard by night, this sleepy town feels like it did a century ago, the expectation of a big day tomorrow ever on the horizon.
