During the fall, the vineyards of the Alps, Piemonte, and Tuscany come alive with the vendange or vendemmia – fields are full of workers, families, and friends getting together to celebrate the season’s bounty. After a hard day of work, a picnic or a family-style meal, with last year’s wines, local wild game, and the flavors of fall. This is the best time of year to truly appreciate the enduring connection between these people and their land; the agrarian culture that is as important today as ever before, alive and well in rural central Europe.
The harvest season is also about celebrating their hard work and the gifts of the land; festivals and fairs go on everywhere from August through November throughout the Alps and beyond. The song of cowbells is a constant soundtrack, as farmers bring their herds back down the mountain for the winter. Désalpe celebrations often parade them through the villages, each family showing off their prize cow dressed with a crown of wildflowers.
