The Matterhorn is perhaps the most recognized peak in the world, conjuring up fairytale images of an idyllic valley lost in time. Lucky for us, the reality is not that far-off. The small village of Zermatt, surrounded by 4000-meter peaks, has been a pilgrimage for hikers and mountaineers for almost two centuries, creating a storybook history unparalleled throughout the Alps. Rest comfortably at an elegant Belle Epoque hotel and depart for your daily hikes just as Edward Whymper did in 1865 en route to his climb of the Matterhorn, the first ascent.
Local Guides: The past lives on through our local guides and hosts, many of whom are third or fourth-generation Zermatters, who are experts on the history of the valley, and will guide us on daily interactive hikes. With stops along the way for a picnic lunch or a true gastronomic experience at one of the many exceptional on mountain restaurants, you’ll refuel in style.
Sample Itinerary - Zermatt Hiking:
- Day 1: Check-in at hotel, afternoon hike to Blatten, apero and sunset on the terrace.
- Day 2: Gornergrat Hiking. Morning ride to the top of the Gornergrat cog railway. Hike to Findeln for a late afternoon lunch at Chez Vrony, one of our favorite restaurants with a striking view of the Matterhorn.
- Day 3: Hörnlihuttte. Hiking from Schwarzsee up the beginning of the northeast ridge of the Matterhorn, to the Hörnlihuttte - where climbers stay before summiting the iconic peak.
- Day 4: Climbing through the Trift gorge, continue on to Zmutt, a historic farming village, located below the north face of the Matterhorn. Afternoon visit to the Zermatt museum.
- Day 5: The Mark Twain Trail, following in his adventures and exploits from “A Tramp Abroad”, make your way through the glacier garden of the tongue of the Monte Rosa Glacier, and continue on for a “civilized lunch” at Riffelalp.
- Day 6: Top of the world! Opportunity to climb a 4000 meter peak with a UIAGM mountain guide, there are many different options depending on your level of fitness and technical ability.
