Don't get me wrong, ski season is what brought me to Switzerland, and to the Alps a dozen years ago, and why I fell in love with these mountains. But on a mountain bike, you can cover just as much, if not more ground in a day, winding up in the most authentic little farm villages where life has hardly changed for 50 years, and a cold beer awaits you in every little café or mountain restaurant. The network of incredible hiking trails is like a spiderweb covering the landscape, and we spend time every day here drooling over topo maps, searching for a new run. They are everywhere.
And while road biking has been a European passion for a century, it comes as no secret given the quality of roads respectful drivers, and diversity of rides. You can push yourself with a classic alpine climb to a historic col, or just go for a spin along the vineyards and orchards on the Rhône. And with the Tour de France just kicking off last weekend, the entire continent (well, maybe not the Germans, Dutch, and Spanish) has shifted gears from football to cycling.
