For the past couple of weeks, the Alps have been hit by a massive Canicule, or heat wave - the worst since 2003, apparently. Triple-digit temps (F) have been the norm, not cooling down at night, and down in the valleys it is almost intolerable. The only answer is to get up high at altitude and look for a lake to take an icy dip in, or hike to a glacier and get a little bit of nature's air conditioning.
This past weekend is always a little bit strabge to be away from our homeland - while Switzerland celebrates their Fête National on August 1, there's not much going on for the 4th of July other than what we make of it, so we celebrate by getting outdoors and doing what we love, throwing some burgers and dogs on the grill, and should there be some leftover fireworks lying around, they may be launched sometime late in the evening in our mayens neighborhood.
After a couple of long hiking trips that wrapped up just before the weekend, we had some free time, and spent it looking for any form of relief we could find, and explored the haute Val de Bagnes, the valley we live in, to find some lakes and glaciers to play in. And back at home late on the 4th, we were surprised to see an extensive fireworks show up above Verbier (for someone's wedding, but we'll take it!). Sometimes the best discoveries are right in your own backyard.
