The city of Lucerne is wonderful and well worth a visit, but as it is on most traveler’s “must-see” list, there are times it’s nice to escape the crowds at a nearby retreat. Enter the Villa Honegg 5* on the Bürgenstock Mountain, overlooking the Vierwaldstättersee (literally 4 forest-state sea, better known as Lake Lucerne to Anglophones!). The historic hotel built in 1906 underwent a complete restoration in 2011, and now feels more like a luxury country home trapped in time – an era where you might enjoy afternoon croquet, or tea wrapped in a warm blanket on the terrace, where you might stay for 3 – 4 weeks to enjoy “civilized” nature. Today, the building is fitted with all of the amenities you would expect from a leading Swiss 5* hotel, but the feeling is still very 1906; it’s all about enjoying the peace and simplicity of a mountain top, and perhaps a dip in the not-so-historic infinity pool hanging over the lake, which we consider Switzerland’s best!
