The end of September in our home, the Val de Bagnes, means one thing - the celebration of the Désalpes, or descent of the cows from the high-alpine meadows, and the Raclette cheese that they are famous for. In fact, Bagnes is called the “Capitale de Raclette”, and to see the streets of Le Châble lined with dozens of purveyors and to smell the wafts of melting fromage, you would never argue otherwise.
This is the time of year that the “cheese cowboys” get together for the first time in months, having been up in the Alpages with their herds, and a fair amount of Fendant (white wine that apparently goes well with the oozy cheese) is put down. Last year, nearly 20,000 cheese enthusiasts helped the cowboys to celebrate, and this year looked to surpass that number. The Fête de Raclette is a sign that winter is not too far off, and we can’t wait.
