One of the most unique parts of a hiking or ski trip in the Alps is a visit to a mountain hut or cabin. The extensive system of cozy refuges built at high altitude is generally a welcome surprise for our American guests. In Switzerland alone, there are 152 huts managed by the Swiss Alpine Club-SAC (www.sac-cas.ch/en/huts/), plus many more privately managed huts.
One of the most spectacular is the SAC Cabane d’Orny, on the eastern slope of the Mont Blanc Massif 2813m ( www.cabanedorny.ch ), easily accessed using the Champex chairlift during the summer months. The leisurely hike takes you across the steep grassy slopes of the Val d’Orny, and up to the tongue of the imposing Glacier d’Orny. In the winter the surrounding ski touring is limitless, with the nearby Cabane Trient open from mid-March to mid-May, and if you prefer the easy way up and down, we can heliski from the Trient glacier right to the front door!
