I was a little upset when David Lebovitz beat me to the blog on the Vevey market - it has always been one of my favorites, and I thought it would be outside the realm of the former Chez Panisse pastry chef-turned-Parisian food blogger (www.davidlebovitz.com/2011/04/the-vevey-market/). Oh well, at least it has validated that the markets in our region of Switzerland are some of the best in Europe.
The small stalls lined with produce picked that morning, on the rolling farmland just north of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva to Americans). Tiny asparagus and “Mara des bois” strawberries, and boxes of wild mushrooms like bolets, chanterelles, and the much sought-after springtime morels. Let’s not forget the bouquets of peonies, and numerous vendors selling local cheeses, and last but not least the shaggy French-speaking dogs relaxing in the sun to the sound of accordion music.
