Late spring in the Valais is punctuated by finally hearing the sounds of cowbells again, which have hung silent all winter. One of the best local events is the annual “Combats de Reines”, an age-old tradition that determines the queen of the herd of Hérens dairy, cattle from which the region’s famous raclette and fondue cheeses come.
These non-violent cow-fights are more of a community event, and the farmers’ pride in their queen trumps all.
