The history of hospitality in Zermatt runs deep, and with so many classic Belle Epoque hotels and renowned restaurants, it is hard to make a mark. Enter Heinz Julen - local artist, designer, architect, and hotelier who has set the standard for alpine modernity, by mixing surprising elements of old and new amongst his own furniture designs and artwork.
Heinz, a descendant of one of the original families of Zermatt has created a unique hotel in the center of the village, that bears his signature style in every element, each piece of furniture has been hand-made in his Zermatt studio, and his artwork adorns the walls. The six cube lofts are for design enthusiasts, while the elegant deluxe double rooms and the cozy double rooms allow for wonderful relaxation in a slightly more “typical” configuration.
In the same complex you will find the “Vernissage”: Cinema, theatre, bar, nightclub and art gallery, the multi-functioning hub of Heinz’s empire.
SPA & WELLNESS: “A different kind of spa”, seven pavilions, each representing a day in the Earth’s creation: a darkened steam room with pulsating light for Day One (“let there be light”), a soaking tub with Dead Sea salt–treated water and the sounds of dolphins and birds for Day Five’s conjuring of fish and fowl. Recently awarded Architectural Digest’s best-designed spas around the world.
FOOD & DRINK: “After Seven” (winter only) cuisine is made up of a creative mix of local and cosmopolitan, sometimes inspired by an exotic side, but always fresh from the market and in season. This cuisine is marked by the original touch of Ivo Adam, chef and director of the Group Seven at Ascona. The open kitchen is the fine dining restaurant’s centerpiece that is filled with a personalized charm.
“Cinedinner” by Ivo Adam, a special dining experience while watching a movie in the Vernissage. A movie entrance, a homemade aperitif, and a three-course menu are included (menu changes weekly).
LOCATION: The Backstage is located in the center of Zermatt, on the Hoffmattstrasse. Walking distance to all shops, restaurants and ski bus.
