A historic mansion turned art-inspired boutique hotel, designed by Italian architects Bertolini e Galli, who oversaw the complete renovations of the old building and the expansion of the Hotel. Great care was taken to keep the typical exterior strength of these fascinating buildings, trying at the same time to restore its distinctive convivial soul. The new wooden construction, evoking the traditional barns of the Engadin region, hides behind the existing buildings.
The walls of the new rooms & suites are covered with Arolla pine and larch wood and the bathrooms are realized in soapstone. The underground spaces, once used as winery, have become the new hotel spa with hammam, sauna and a swimming pool at the ground floor.
A 16,000 square foot extension was added onto the mansion to act as a monumental hall, with a wall made entirely of crystal and several remarkable pieces of installation art; “Steingarten” by artist Letizia Cariello, in a moraine of grey-green rocks and steel balls suggesting the theme of water in the High Engadine landscape. The rest of the hall is filled with a mix of ancient and contemporary as well as walls of art and design books.
The hotel offers accommodation for up to 26 guests in 13 rooms – every one individually designed. But all of the rooms are a testament to the hotel’s mission: to create a boutique space that celebrates the beauty of good design and untouched nature.
WELLNESS: The underground spaces, once used as winery, have become the new hotel Spa with hammam, sauna and a swimming pool at the ground level.
FOOD & DRINK: The small 20-seat restaurant is as unique as the rest of the Chesa Colani, illuminated with a monumental Murano white glass chandelier. Guests choose their wine while visiting the cellar, and meals are crafted by the chef to suit the tastes of each individual guest, with an emphasis on local ingredients and Mediterranean-Italian technique.
LOCATION: The Chesa Stuva Colani is located in the historical centre of Madulain, a tiny village, with just 170 inhabitants, 12km from the center of St. Moritz. At 1800 meters above sea level, it is set amongst some of the most characteristic Engadin villages such as: La Punt Chamues, Zuoz and S-Chanf.
